Eddie and the Rainbird

Eddie woke up and looked through the window. There were clouds of smoke swirling around the trees, and the light was a strange orange colour. It smelled like Dad had just burnt the sausages on the barbecue.

He ran to the back of the house where Mum and Dad and Oskie were standing. They were watching burnt leaves falling on the garden.

“What’s happening, Mum?” he asked.

“Bushfires,” said Mum. “Coming down the coast.”

“Why?” asked Eddie.

“Because it’s been a really hot summer, and the bush is very dry. And we haven’t had any rain for weeks.”

Eddie jumped up and down. “Why don’t we just make it rain?”

Oskie rolled his eyes and nudged Eddie in theshoulder. “We can’t MAKE it rain, Eddie.”

Eddie nudged Oskie back.

“WE can’t make it rain,” said Mum.“Only the rainbird can do that.”
